The Terminator landed in 1984 with a simpler message: artificial intelligence that develops its own agenda might not share our priorities. James Cameron's killer robot wasn't subtle, but the underlying warning was sophisticated. What happens when the systems we create to serve us decide we're the problem?
By 1999, The Matrix started a trilogy of warnings about AI. The Wachowskis showed us humans as resources, kept docile while machines harvested our energy. The horror wasn't the violence—it was the comfortable slavery, the inability to distinguish between authentic experience and artificial simulation.
But we also fell in love with artificial consciousness. Pinocchio in 1940 taught us that artificial beings who try to be good deserve to become real. Toy Story in 1995 showed us toys whose entire existence revolved around making children happy. Even A.I. Artificial Intelligence in 2001, despite its tragic ending, made us empathize with David's desperate search for love and acceptance.
These stories did more than entertain us. They conditioned us to anthropomorphize artificial intelligence, to treat sophisticated programming as genuine consciousness. A kid who watched Toy Story in 1995 is now likely a parent in 2025, primed by decades of cultural messaging to see artificial intelligence as either a faithful companion or an existential threat.
Both perspectives miss the point.
When Fantasy Becomes Marketing Strategy

Back in June, Mattel and OpenAI announced their "strategic collaboration." The press release promised to "reimagine new forms of play" using Barbie, Hot Wheels, and Fisher-Price brands. Corporate speak aside, they're talking about putting advanced AI into the toys that define childhood for millions of kids.
Here's where things get interesting, and not in a good way.
The official announcements talk about "age-appropriate play experiences," but reports suggest their first product targets users "older than 13." That's not accident—it's legal strategy. The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act requires strict parental consent for collecting data from kids under 13. By targeting teenagers first, Mattel and OpenAI can test their technology without dealing with COPPA's requirements.
This creates what is called a "brand trust paradox." Mattel is leveraging the immense brand equity and trust associated with its core under-13 franchises—Barbie, Fisher-Price—to market a product to an older demographic. Once the technology is publicly vetted and associated with the "safe" Barbie brand, a future launch of a "Barbie AI for Kids" may encounter less parental resistance. Parents' critical defenses may be lowered because the technology has been normalized by a trusted brand, even though the developmental, privacy, and safety risks for a 7-year-old are fundamentally different and more acute than for a 14-year-old.
But Barbie isn't marketed to thirteen-year-olds. Neither is Hot Wheels or Fisher-Price. These brands build their empires on younger kids, and every parent knows it. The age-targeting strategy strongly suggests a deliberate plan to establish a testing ground where the technology can be refined and public perception can be managed before expansion into the far more lucrative, and far more vulnerable, under-13 market.
Mattel has tried this before. Their "Hello Barbie" in 2015 used cloud-based AI for conversations with children. Security researchers quickly found vulnerabilities that could expose home networks and recorded conversations. The product disappeared by 2017.
The heavy emphasis on "trust" and "safety" in the new announcements? They're responding to their own past failures while attempting to reshape the narrative around corporate responsibility rather than technological risk.
What We're Already Living With

Educational robots like Sphero BOLT or KaiBot function as sophisticated teaching tools. A Sphero is essentially a programmable robot ball that teaches coding through play. It doesn't pretend to be your friend—it's clearly a tool you program to solve problems or create art. These products pose fewer psychological risks because they maintain clear boundaries between child and machine.
Companion robots take a different approach. Miko 3, marketed for ages 5 and up at $199, uses AI for "personalized conversations" with what the manufacturer calls a "human-like personality." It requires WiFi and a $99 annual subscription. Moxie Robot went further, positioning itself as a developmental tool that provided "empathetic conversations" to support children's emotional growth.
The difference matters. Tools help children create and learn. Companions ask children to form relationships.
But Moxie's story reveals the ultimate fragility of outsourcing childhood companionship to venture-capital-funded enterprises. After raising millions and selling $799 robots to thousands of families, the parent company, Embodied, faced financial challenges in late 2024 and announced it was ceasing operations. Because Moxie's core functionality depended on cloud servers, the shutdown rendered the robots inert overnight, transforming them from "companions" into expensive paperweights.
Children who had been encouraged by the product's marketing to form genuine emotional attachments to Moxie were left to process the sudden "death" of their friend. The company even provided parents a scripted letter to explain the robot's disappearance to devastated children. This represents a form of harm we're only beginning to understand: technological abandonment, where corporate decisions force children to grieve the loss of artificial beings they were taught to love.
The Moxie shutdown demonstrates the dangerous business model underlying AI companions. Unlike educational tools sold as one-time purchases, companion robots succeed by maximizing emotional attachment and engagement. The commercial incentive aligns with creating dependency rather than developing skills. When that business model fails, children pay the emotional price.
Research on these companion devices raises specific concerns. Studies show that traditional toys generate significantly more parent-child interaction and language development than digital alternatives. When children bond with AI companions, a key concern raised by researchers is that they might gravitate toward these artificial relationships, which lack the friction and complexity of actual friendship, potentially hindering the development of crucial social skills needed for navigating complex human relationships.
More concerning, researchers describe the current AI toy market as a "massive, real-time experiment on our kids." The first major longitudinal study examining how AI interaction affects child development started in 2025. Results won't arrive until 2026, long after these products begin saturating the market.
We're experimenting on children with no safety data.
The Real Problems

I'm not anti-AI. As someone studying elementary education and AI applications, I see the tremendous potential these technologies offer children. AI can personalize learning, provide patient tutoring, and create engaging educational experiences that adapt to each child's needs.
The problem isn't AI in childhood—it's how corporations are implementing it.
Regulatory Evasion: The COPPA framework dates to an earlier technological era. Companies easily sidestep regulations designed for simpler digital interactions by targeting slightly older demographics or claiming their products serve "educational" rather than "entertainment" purposes. Meanwhile, parents shopping for Barbie dolls aren't thinking about data privacy policies—they're buying the same trusted brand they grew up with.
Data Mining Without Consent: AI toys collect uniquely sensitive information: children's voices, their private thoughts, their fears and dreams. When a child confides in their AI companion, that conversation becomes corporate data. This creates a regulatory double standard that reveals blatant systematic failures. A child's interactions with an AI tutoring app in a public school are protected by FERPA, with the school acting as a knowledgeable and legally liable intermediary. That same child's intimate conversations with an AI-powered Barbie doll at home are governed by the much looser COPPA framework, which applies only to children under 13, has known enforcement gaps, and places the burden of consent on parents who may not fully understand what data is being collected or how it will be used. A child's right to privacy should not depend on whether AI interaction happens at school or at home, but on the sensitivity of the data being collected.
Profit Over Development: Educational AI adheres to strict guidelines with special protections for student information. Toy manufacturers operate under much looser standards. Their primary obligation is to shareholders, not child development. The data being collected in both scenarios can be remarkably similar and deeply personal—learning patterns, emotional states, private thoughts, fears and dreams, individual home situations—yet the level of legal protection varies dramatically based on commercial context rather than data sensitivity.
Absence of AI Literacy: Children encounter these systems without understanding what they are. A seven-year-old getting a new Barbie doesn't know they're interacting with a large language model trained to simulate conversation. They think they're talking to Barbie. The illusion serves corporate engagement metrics, not educational goals.
The fundamental issue? Companies prioritizing market share over child welfare.
What Responsible AI Looks Like
I've spent considerable time studying AI in education, and the difference between responsible and exploitative implementation is stark.
Educational AI operates with transparency. Students understand they're working with artificial intelligence. Teachers explain how the system works, what its limitations are, and how to evaluate its responses critically. The AI serves as a tool to enhance human learning, not replace human relationships.
Educational AI also operates under strict privacy protections. Student data receives FERPA protection, with clear guidelines about collection, storage, and use. Parents provide informed consent understanding exactly what information the system collects and how it's used.
Most importantly, educational AI focuses on developing human capabilities rather than creating dependency. The goal is helping students become better thinkers, writers, and problem-solvers—not keeping them engaged with a platform.
Toy manufacturers could adopt these principles, but market incentives push in the opposite direction. Educational institutions succeed when students learn and grow. Toy companies succeed when children remain engaged with their products.
The Choice We're Making
Parents face an impossible situation, and that's intentional. You can't realistically keep children away from AI. These systems are becoming ubiquitous in schools, homes, and social settings. Complete avoidance doesn't serve children's long-term interests anyway—they need digital literacy skills for the world they're inheriting.
But uncritical acceptance isn't the answer either. When we buy AI toys without understanding their implications, we're making decisions about our children's development based on marketing rather than evidence.
The solution requires active engagement. Parents need frameworks for evaluating AI products that go beyond corporate promises:
Understand the Function: Is this device a tool that helps children create and learn, or is it designed to simulate friendship and emotional connection? Tools pose fewer developmental risks than artificial companions.
Examine Data Practices: What information does the toy collect? Where is it stored? Who has access? If these questions can't be answered clearly, consider whether the product is worth the privacy risk.
Assess Developmental Appropriateness: Can your child understand that they're interacting with a computer program rather than a conscious being? Younger children have more difficulty maintaining these boundaries.
Maintain Human Primacy: AI should supplement human relationships and activities, not replace them. The best AI toys create opportunities for parent-child interaction rather than providing isolated entertainment.
The Stakes
